Monday nights dull? Not tonight, tonight it’s head on to Amsterdam, to the always beautiful Paradiso venue. To see the second show Soulfly does in the Netherlands. When I entered Paradiso the first thing I notice is the immense poster flag of the album cover rising up behind the small drum kit. Of course the stage is decorated with some drums, and a Brazilian flag. It leaves no doubt that Max Cavalera and his band Soulfly are about to shake Amsterdam’s foundations.

Soulfly
After the same intro that opens the ‘Dark Ages’ album Max Cavalera and his three companions kick of with an extreme hard version of ‘Babylon’. One thing is clear from the beginning Soulfly is in a good mood tonight, and this absolutely reflexes on the crowd. Right from the beginning the crowd goes absolutely wild. The sound tonight is loud, extreme loud and extreme heavy. Soulfly let the music do the talking tonight, with no break they go straight on with ‘Seek and Strike’ and ‘Living Sacrifice’.
Max goes down memory lane as well by playing three Sepultura songs; ‘Roots Bloody Roots’, ‘Inner self’ and ‘Refuse/Resist’. Although it are probably the best songs from the evening I find it a bid superfluous, with five “Soulfly” studio albums they can’t be short of material.

One of the main eye catchers from the evening is absolutely guitarist Marc Rizzo. He jumps around the stage as if his life depends on it. Perhaps not his life, but the success of the show is also due to him, I haven’t heard max his guitar during the whole show (perhaps because of some technical troubles with his equipment).

“Dark ages” might be the Soulfly album with the less tribal influences, on stage they still give a big drum solo on tradional Brazilian drums. This is always one of the highlights in every Soulfly show. Especially for the fan the pull on stage to jam along with the band.
After the drums solo an old acquaintance enter the stage; Ritchie Cavalera. He is here for guest vocals on ‘Bleed’ and ‘Tree of Pain’. The last time I saw him was on dynamo in 1998, since then Ritchie has grown from a boy into a man. He has absolutely a very powerful voice.

After only 75 minutes it’s already time for the first of two three encores. They kick of with ‘Inner self’ followed by an extreme loud and hard version of ‘Frontlines’. There is only one song Amsterdam absolutely can’t do without; ‘Eye for Eye’. As soon as the band sets in the tune the whole venue goes wild. From the very front all the way to back an up to the second balcony throats are screaming along the words: EYE FOR AN EYE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
With just a simple ‘thank you Amsterdam’ Soulfly leaves the stage, and a very short one and a half hour the show is over. That is also my biggest comment to the show, the sound was good, the light where good, the band played good only with five studio albums and tickets sold for € 22.00 the show could have lasted a little longer.

For those of you who are interested here is the total set list: Intro/Babylon – Seek ‘n Strike – Living Sacrifice – Roots Bloody Roots – Jumpdafuckup/Bring it – Born Again – Mars – Refuse/Resist – Execution Style – Corrosion creeps – Arise Again – Carved Inside – Tribe – No Hope=No Fear – Bleed – Tree – Primitive – I and I – Inner self – Frontlines – Eye for an Eye.

Unfortunately I missed the support act, so I can’t tell you about that (some of us have a day job and don’t live next to Amsterdam). But Soulfly gave me absolutely a hell of an evening. Although the show might have lasted a bit longer, and I missed some of my favourites I return back home with a big smile on my face. (Photo`s are from the archives)
